Serrata
Kiln Cast Glass, Tassie Oak, LED
(2025)
Serrata functions both as fine art and a bespoke table light. A meditation on translation, transformation and materiality, the piece features a kiln cast glass banksia and a Tassie Oak base.
Banksias, much like glass, rely on a significant amount of heat to facilitate a change in form and purpose. This process of transformation was engaged with in the casting of the Banksia Seedpod. The cast itself is a replication of a digitally fabricated Banksia, that began its life as a scanned Banksia Serrata. This scan was then upscaled, 3D modelled and 3D printed before being made into a mould for casting. Engagement with both traditional and emerging fabrication methods, and their relationship, were essential in realising this project. Remnants of the final object’s journey from digital to literal are present in the 3D printer’s path marks visible on the cast’s surface.
